Panorama Consulting Solutions Releases 2015 ERP Report

Many Projects on or Under Budget, but ERP Failure Still on the Rise

Project budget adherence has no correlation with ERP success, according to the 2015 ERP Report issued today by Panorama Consulting Solutions, the world’s leading independent ERP consulting firm.

While nearly half of organizations (45-percent) reported that their ERP projects were on- or under-budget, the number of reported ERP failures increased by five-percent since last year. Organizations indicating that their projects were over-budget pointed to challenges such as expanded scope, underestimated staffing, additional technology requirements and unanticipated technical or organizational issues.

The report highlights a $1.7-million increase in average implementation cost and a two-month decrease in average duration. In addition, 60-percent of organizations failed to realize the business benefits they expected from their ERP implementations, which is an increase of 10-percent over last year. The data also reveal that the percentage of organizations implementing software as a service (SaaS) has increased by 29-percent (from four-percent last year to 33-percent this year).

The data for this report was collected in partnership with Mint Jutras, an unbiased, third-party analyst firm.

“While organizations anticipate significant benefits from their ERP systems, our research reveals that many still struggle to achieve these benefits,” said Cindy Jutras, President of Mint Jutras. “In order to maximize benefits realization, organizations need to set parameters and define how they will measure success.”

Panorama Consulting Solutions Releases 2014 ERP Report

Organizational Issues Number One Reason for Extended Durations

Organizations that do not allocate enough of their project budget to organizational change management are more likely to face organizational issues that lead to extended durations, according to the 2014 ERP Report issued today by Panorama Consulting Solutions, the world’s leading independent ERP consulting firm.

Every year, the main challenge organizations face is extended implementation durations (73-percent). This year, the most common cause of extended durations noted by respondents was “organizational issues (14-percent).”

The report also highlighted a decrease in benefits realization. The percentage of respondents realizing less than half of anticipated benefits (66-percent) has slightly increased since last year, where 60-percent of respondents received less than half of the benefits they expected. Additionally, the data revealed that over half of organizations (51-percent) experienced a material operational disruption at “go-live,” such as not being able to ship product or close the books. Sixty-percent of these respondents experienced a disruption that lasted one month or longer.

“Now, more than ever, our findings are emphasizing the importance of organizational change and its impact on implementation duration,” said Eric Kimberling, managing partner of Panorama Consulting Solutions. “Successful organizations know that the amount of time and money they invest in training, communication and risk mitigation directly affects benefits realization and overall project results.”

Of important consideration is that the number of respondents who employed the services of an ERP consulting firm has increased since last year (from 23- to 83-percent). However, 33-percent of respondents indicated that they were “unsatisfied” or “very unsatisfied” with the implementation service provided by the third-party assisting them.

Average Cost of Manufacturing ERP Implementations Higher Than Implementation Cost Across All Industries

Heavy customization of ERP software results in high ERP implementation costs for the manufacturing industry, according to The 2014 Manufacturing ERP Report issued today by Panorama Consulting Solutions, the world’s leading independent ERP consulting firm. The report revealed that manufacturing ERP implementations cost 14-percent more than ERP implementations across all industries. While the average ERP implementation across all industries costs $9.8 million, the average manufacturing ERP implementation costs $11.4 million.

“The fact that manufacturing ERP implementations have a relatively high risk of going over budget emphasizes the importance of planning for a realistic and objective project budget and scope during the software selection stage of the initiative,” said Eric Kimberling, managing partner of Panorama Consulting Solutions. “Manufacturing organizations that fail to develop and execute a strong implementation plan often encounter unexpected costs related to integration, customization and change management.”

The report suggests that 63-percent of manufacturing ERP implementations go over budget, compared to 59-percent of ERP implementations across all industries. While actual implementation costs run over budget by an average of $1.7 million in all industries, average implementation costs run over by $3 million in the manufacturing industry. In addition, manufacturing organizations tend to have higher customization levels than organizations across all industries, with 13-percent of manufacturing organizations customizing over 50-percent of their ERP systems’ code. Only 6-percent of organizations across all industries implement ERP with this level of customization.

“The complexity of manufacturing processes often calls for heavy customization, which is a driver of implementation cost,” said Kimberling. “Manufacturing organizations should plan for customization costs upfront in order to reduce the risk of budget overruns and achieve a high return on investment.”

Panorama Consulting Solutions Releases Clash of the Titans 2014: An Independent Comparison of SAP, Oracle and Microsoft Dynamics

Shorter Implementation Times Mean Longer Payback Periods for Tier I Customers

The time it takes for organizations to recoup costs from their Tier I ERP implementations increases as their project durations decrease, according to the Clash of the Titans 2014: An Independent Comparison of SAP, Oracle and Microsoft Dynamics report issued today by Panorama Consulting Solutions, the world’s leading independent ERP consulting firm. Compared to SAP and Oracle, customers of Microsoft Dynamics experienced shorter implementation times (12.5 months on average) but longer payback periods (50-percent of respondents took more than three years to recoup costs). The opposite is true for Oracle customers, who experienced longer implementation times (22.5 months) but shorter payback periods (only 13-percent of respondents took more than three years to recoup costs).

“This negative correlation between implementation duration and payback period emphasizes the importance of developing a thorough and detailed implementation plan,” said Eric Kimberling, managing partner of Panorama Consulting Solutions. “Organizations that rush through implementation or reduce scope to meet an arbitrary go-live date are bound to lose focus on achieving return on investment or expected benefits.”

While the average payback periods across all three vendors has decreased from 2.4 years in 2012 to 1.7 years in the 2014 report, the percent of respondents that have not recouped costs has increased from 31-percent to 38-percent. In addition, 50-percent or more of organizations implementing these three solutions experienced some sort of material operational disruption at the time of go-live, suggesting that organizations that decrease implementation duration and budget are likely to increase their vulnerability to post-implementation operational disruption.

“Organizations that have yet to recoup the costs of their ERP software investment often have either not dedicated the appropriate resources to ensure the new system is accepted and utilized by end-users or implemented the proper performance metrics to gauge efficacy over time,” said Kimberling. “While cutting important project components, such as business case development, organizational change management and business process reengineering, from your timeline may shorten your overall duration, the flipside is that your organization will likely increase implementation risk and struggle to achieve meaningful ROI in a reasonable timeframe.”
