Panorama Consulting Solutions Hires “New” Director of Expert Witness Services

Panorama Consulting Solutions Hires “New” Director of Expert Witness Services

Panorama Consulting Solutions, the world’s leading independent ERP consulting firm, recently hired Bill Baumann as Director of Expert Witness Services. Baumann was previously with Panorama for two and a half years, playing a role in business development and serving as a Director of Client Services, overseeing Panorama ERP software selection and implementation projects, as well as expert witness engagements.

Baumann has more than 35 years of experience in marketing strategy, direct sales, account management and C-level management. In his new role, Baumann will forge relationships

with prospects interested in any of Panorama’s expert services, including expert witness testimony, project recovery and independent verification and validation.

“Our expert services are poised to make the jump to the next level,” said Baumann. “I’m excited to contribute to the development of one of Panorama’s most valuable service areas.”

SAP vs. Oracle Case Study

SAP and Oracle both invest heavily in cloud technology. However, our client was skeptical about cloud scalability and unsure if the products were mature and proven.

Baumann’s expert witness background has contributed to his holistic perspective when it comes to investigating the causes of failed ERP implementations. He is skilled at identifying root causes that extend beyond technology, and he considers failure points related to change management and business process management. Baumann has ERP implementation experience on both the client and vendor side, giving him an understanding of both parties involved in ERP lawsuits.

“I’m glad to be joining such a talented and dedicated team,” said Baumann. “Our combined expertise will undoubtedly help companies succeed in their digital transformation initiatives.”

Baumann will be participating in Panorama’s upcoming ERP Boot Camp on May 22-23 in Chicago, IL. He will share his expertise in independent verification and validation, and discuss the importance of using a third-party to audit project deliverables. Visit Panorama’s website to learn more about ERP Boot Camp.

Panorama Consulting Solutions Releases 2015 ERP Report

Many Projects on or Under Budget, but ERP Failure Still on the Rise

Project budget adherence has no correlation with ERP success, according to the 2015 ERP Report issued today by Panorama Consulting Solutions, the world’s leading independent ERP consulting firm.

While nearly half of organizations (45-percent) reported that their ERP projects were on- or under-budget, the number of reported ERP failures increased by five-percent since last year. Organizations indicating that their projects were over-budget pointed to challenges such as expanded scope, underestimated staffing, additional technology requirements and unanticipated technical or organizational issues.

The report highlights a $1.7-million increase in average implementation cost and a two-month decrease in average duration. In addition, 60-percent of organizations failed to realize the business benefits they expected from their ERP implementations, which is an increase of 10-percent over last year. The data also reveal that the percentage of organizations implementing software as a service (SaaS) has increased by 29-percent (from four-percent last year to 33-percent this year).

The data for this report was collected in partnership with Mint Jutras, an unbiased, third-party analyst firm.

“While organizations anticipate significant benefits from their ERP systems, our research reveals that many still struggle to achieve these benefits,” said Cindy Jutras, President of Mint Jutras. “In order to maximize benefits realization, organizations need to set parameters and define how they will measure success.”

About Panorama Consulting Solutions’ 2015 ERP Report

Data for the 2015 ERP Report was collected by Panorama and Mint Jutras via online polling. Information was collected from February 2014 to March 2015. The 562 participants represent organizations that have worked on ERP initiatives within the last year. The full report can be accessed at: //www.panorama-consulting.com/resource-center/2015-erp-report/.

Twin Cities to Host Leading Thinkers on HR Trends in Evolving American Workplace

Marcus Buckingham, Author and National Expert on Human Capital Spotlights Key Strategies for HR Professionals and Companies to Standout

This April the Twin Cities will host leading thinkers in the strategic workforce and talent management arena and convene to discuss widespread change in the modern American workplace. The Minnesota HR Tech Expo, conceivekd and organized by LEHRN.org (the Leading Edge Human Resources Network), features nationally-renowned human capital expert Marcus Buckingham discussing the radical shift in the way employers need to engage their people.

“There is a fundamental and radical shift happening in the workplace,” says Marcus Buckingham, founder, The Marcus Buckingham Company. “Human Resources professionals and employers need to understand that and embrace it before they start falling behind. It’s a shift from an organizational-level focus to the critical importance of team leaders, and from a reliance on generalist big data to the effective use of smart data to empower and move an organization forward. It’s going to be a new era in the workplace.”

Buckingham, via live conference from the West Coast, along with Jason Averbook, CEO of The Marcus Buckingham Company will keynote the one-day Minnesota HR Tech Expo event on April 9, 2015 at the Minneapolis’ Marriott City Center Hotel. The keynote will focus on five key trends that HR professionals must understand as workplaces evolve around them. These trends include a new focus on team leaders within organizations as the drivers of business and growth; a shift from big data to smart data that empowers an organization; the personalization of everything as employees grow to expect onboarding and mentoring tailored exactly to their needs; coaching not feedback; and finally, new technologies created not for the overall organization but for team leader insight.

“Marcus is known worldwide for creating the Strengths revolution which caused a lot of traditionally-held and outdated human talent management practices to be upturned,” says Matt Peterson, executive director, LEHRN. “We’re expecting a full house for his keynote insights into the kind of organizational and technological shifts critical for engaging the workforce of the future.”

For the Minnesota HR Tech Expo, LEHRN is bringing together other leading thinkers in the evolving talent management space with an agenda that tackles key issues including acquiring the best talent, social recruiting trends, embracing change, managing risk and a wide variety of HR technologies. The event also features product booths and demonstrations from ADP, Ceridian, Infor, Oracle, Ultimate, Workday, Panorama Consulting Solutions and 50 other technology companies. All attendees will receive a free, signed copy of Marcus Buckingham’s new book StandOut.

The Marcus Buckingham Company CEO Jason Averbook will provide the closing keynote on new, addictive HR technologies that organizations must embrace to obtain and maintain a competitive edge in the new employer landscape.

“Addictive technologies are the next big trend in human capital management,” says Averbook. “It’s about designing IT systems not at the macro-organizational level but specifically for team leaders to enable them to lead more quickly, more efficiently and with greater insight. The same evolved technologies will also be critical as we move toward far more personalized employee management, coaching and recognition.”

Panorama Consulting Solutions Releases 2014 ERP Report

Organizational Issues Number One Reason for Extended Durations

Organizations that do not allocate enough of their project budget to organizational change management are more likely to face organizational issues that lead to extended durations, according to the 2014 ERP Report issued today by Panorama Consulting Solutions, the world’s leading independent ERP consulting firm.

Every year, the main challenge organizations face is extended implementation durations (73-percent). This year, the most common cause of extended durations noted by respondents was “organizational issues (14-percent).”

The report also highlighted a decrease in benefits realization. The percentage of respondents realizing less than half of anticipated benefits (66-percent) has slightly increased since last year, where 60-percent of respondents received less than half of the benefits they expected. Additionally, the data revealed that over half of organizations (51-percent) experienced a material operational disruption at “go-live,” such as not being able to ship product or close the books. Sixty-percent of these respondents experienced a disruption that lasted one month or longer.

“Now, more than ever, our findings are emphasizing the importance of organizational change and its impact on implementation duration,” said Eric Kimberling, managing partner of Panorama Consulting Solutions. “Successful organizations know that the amount of time and money they invest in training, communication and risk mitigation directly affects benefits realization and overall project results.”

Of important consideration is that the number of respondents who employed the services of an ERP consulting firm has increased since last year (from 23- to 83-percent). However, 33-percent of respondents indicated that they were “unsatisfied” or “very unsatisfied” with the implementation service provided by the third-party assisting them.

“The ideal consulting firm is one that can come alongside your organizational and ensure that every dollar spent on your ERP project contributes to your organizational goals and objectives,” said Kimberling. “While many ERP consultants claim to understand organizational change management, few have a strong and proven methodology that is designed to impact every stakeholder in your organization.”

To offer further analysis of the study results, register for Panorama’s upcoming webinar on March 20, hosted by Eric Kimberling. Register here: //www.panorama-consulting.com/resource-center/erp-webinars/.

Panorama Consulting Solutions Releases 2014 Manufacturing ERP Report

Average Cost of Manufacturing ERP Implementations Higher Than Implementation Cost Across All Industries

Heavy customization of ERP software results in high ERP implementation costs for the manufacturing industry, according to The 2014 Manufacturing ERP Report issued today by Panorama Consulting Solutions, the world’s leading independent ERP consulting firm. The report revealed that manufacturing ERP implementations cost 14-percent more than ERP implementations across all industries. While the average ERP implementation across all industries costs $9.8 million, the average manufacturing ERP implementation costs $11.4 million.

“The fact that manufacturing ERP implementations have a relatively high risk of going over budget emphasizes the importance of planning for a realistic and objective project budget and scope during the software selection stage of the initiative,” said Eric Kimberling, managing partner of Panorama Consulting Solutions. “Manufacturing organizations that fail to develop and execute a strong implementation plan often encounter unexpected costs related to integration, customization and change management.”

The report suggests that 63-percent of manufacturing ERP implementations go over budget, compared to 59-percent of ERP implementations across all industries. While actual implementation costs run over budget by an average of $1.7 million in all industries, average implementation costs run over by $3 million in the manufacturing industry. In addition, manufacturing organizations tend to have higher customization levels than organizations across all industries, with 13-percent of manufacturing organizations customizing over 50-percent of their ERP systems’ code. Only 6-percent of organizations across all industries implement ERP with this level of customization.

“The complexity of manufacturing processes often calls for heavy customization, which is a driver of implementation cost,” said Kimberling. “Manufacturing organizations should plan for customization costs upfront in order to reduce the risk of budget overruns and achieve a high return on investment.”

Panorama Consulting Solutions Releases Clash of the Titans 2014: An Independent Comparison of SAP, Oracle and Microsoft Dynamics

Shorter Implementation Times Mean Longer Payback Periods for Tier I Customers

The time it takes for organizations to recoup costs from their Tier I ERP implementations increases as their project durations decrease, according to the Clash of the Titans 2014: An Independent Comparison of SAP, Oracle and Microsoft Dynamics report issued today by Panorama Consulting Solutions, the world’s leading independent ERP consulting firm. Compared to SAP and Oracle, customers of Microsoft Dynamics experienced shorter implementation times (12.5 months on average) but longer payback periods (50-percent of respondents took more than three years to recoup costs). The opposite is true for Oracle customers, who experienced longer implementation times (22.5 months) but shorter payback periods (only 13-percent of respondents took more than three years to recoup costs).

“This negative correlation between implementation duration and payback period emphasizes the importance of developing a thorough and detailed implementation plan,” said Eric Kimberling, managing partner of Panorama Consulting Solutions. “Organizations that rush through implementation or reduce scope to meet an arbitrary go-live date are bound to lose focus on achieving return on investment or expected benefits.”

While the average payback periods across all three vendors has decreased from 2.4 years in 2012 to 1.7 years in the 2014 report, the percent of respondents that have not recouped costs has increased from 31-percent to 38-percent. In addition, 50-percent or more of organizations implementing these three solutions experienced some sort of material operational disruption at the time of go-live, suggesting that organizations that decrease implementation duration and budget are likely to increase their vulnerability to post-implementation operational disruption.

“Organizations that have yet to recoup the costs of their ERP software investment often have either not dedicated the appropriate resources to ensure the new system is accepted and utilized by end-users or implemented the proper performance metrics to gauge efficacy over time,” said Kimberling. “While cutting important project components, such as business case development, organizational change management and business process reengineering, from your timeline may shorten your overall duration, the flipside is that your organization will likely increase implementation risk and struggle to achieve meaningful ROI in a reasonable timeframe.”

To offer further analysis of the study results, Kimberling will present a free webinar on Thursday, October 24 at 12 p.m. EST. Panorama Consulting Solutions Releases 2013 ERP Report: Organizational Change and Business Process Management

Adjustment to Change Continues to Plague Organizations Implementing ERP Software

It is more difficult for a company implementing enterprise resource planning (ERP) software to adapt to the inherent process and organizational changes than it is to implement the technology, according to the 2013 ERP Report: Organizational Change and Business Process Management issued today by Panorama Consulting Solutions, an independent ERP consulting firm in Denver. Sixty-five-percent of online polling respondents indicated that adjustment to process and organizational changes was “difficult” or “very difficult” and only three-percent indicated it was “easy.” Conversely, 15-percent of respondents characterized the technical aspects of implementation as “easy” or “very easy” and 45-percent indicated they were “difficult” or “very difficult.”

“Organizations often make the mistake of thinking that the technical aspects of an enterprise software implementation pose the most risk,” said Eric Kimberling, managing partner of Panorama Consulting Solutions. “But it is truly the ways in which companies choose to manage (or not to manage) the business process changes during an ERP initiative that have the most correlation to project failure.”

Although 41-percent of respondents experienced operational disruption at go-live, 56-percent still cited “resistance to change” as the key challenge of implementation. Other challenges included “internal resistance to changing the ‘old’ processes” (38-percent), “lack of clear expectations and goals” (36-percent) and “lack of overall vision” (32-percent). Further, more than half of respondents who suffered timeline overages (55-percent) indicated that they were caused by “organizational issues,” including governance, resistance to change and process redesign.

“While organizations certainly need to reduce the propensity and impact of any disruption at go-live, poor organizational change management will ultimately cause the most – and longest lasting – harm to the company,” said Kimberling. “An ERP implementation necessitates enterprise-wide changes that are incredibly stressful to the workforce. An organization that is myopically focused on technological tasks will miss the opportunity to engage its people, support them through the adjustment period and, ultimately, achieve true ROI on the software investment.”

To offer further analysis of the study results, Kimberling will present a free webinar on Thursday, May 16 at 12 p.m. EST. Registration is open at //www.panorama-consulting.com/resource-center/erp-webinars/.
