This week’s weekly poll asks the ERP community their thoughts on how long ERP projects usually take. The poll has been posted on our site for just two days now, but the initial results are already beginning to tell an interesting (but not surprising) story: most ERP projects take longer than expected. In fact, at the time of this blog, 76% of respondents said that ERP projects generally take much longer than expected. In addition, a full 100% said most projects take either slightly longer or much longer than expected.
Based on our experience, this isn’t all that surprising. Poor project management, lack of ERP expertise, and vendor over-selling are just a few examples of the things that can contribute to a project overrun. In some cases, companies try to implement a system that is a poor fit and shouldn’t have been selected in the first place. Regardless of the cause, these initial results demonstrate that getting an ERP project done on time is by no means a slam dunk.
