To help institutions secure sensitive data, Ellucian announced today that it is offering a bundled, multi-layer defense ERP software package that is complemented by best-practice services for Banner by Ellucian customers. Institutions store a wealth of private and personal data—social security numbers, payment information, financial aid records, grades, and intellectual property—that requires a comprehensive data defense to protect student, faculty, and staff information.
Ellucian’s Banner Data Defense combines Oracle Advanced Security, with transparent data encryption software, and the recently-announced Oracle Audit Vault and Database Firewall product, to help ensure data privacy, protect against threats, and maintain regulatory compliance. The package is enhanced by Banner-specific database scripts, documentation and reports, installation and configuration scripts, and best-practice implementation advice from Ellucian’s services team. The solution is designed to encrypt application data such as sensitive personal information; to monitor database traffic to detect and block threats; and to help improve compliance reporting by consolidating audit data from databases, operating systems, directories, and other sources.
“Data security is a serious business problem that institutions are concerned about and need to address,” said Mark Jones, chief product officer, Ellucian. “But configuring and implementing a robust defense solution that encrypts data doesn’t have to be complex; Ellucian has the knowledge of Banner and Oracle systems necessary to implement this multi-layered solution fully and with minimal disruption to users. And once implemented, the data security solutions are transparent to users and won’t hinder their day-to-day work activities.”
The number of security breaches is on the rise. In 2011, there were nearly 900 data breaches at companies around the globe, more than the prior two years, according to In Defense of Data by Symantec, with more than 31 million records involved. The organizational cost of a data breach was estimated at $5.5 million, and the cost per lost or stolen record was $194, according to the study. Banner Data Defense offers several layers of protection to help institutions protect data.
Oracle Advanced Security helps organizations comply with privacy and regulatory mandates by transparently encrypting all application data or specific sensitive columns, such as credit cards, social security numbers, or sensitive personal information. By encrypting data at rest and whenever it leaves the database over the network or via backups, Oracle Advanced Security provides a cost-effective solution in support of comprehensive data protection.
Oracle Audit Vault and Database Firewallprovides a first line of defense for databases and consolidates audit data from databases, operating systems, directories, and more. A highly accurate SQL grammar-based engine monitors and blocks unauthorized SQL traffic before it reaches the database. Database activity from the network is combined with detailed audit data for easy compliance reporting and alerting.
As part of this package, Ellucian, a Gold level member of Oracle PartnerNetwork, provides institutions with policies specific to Banner to help improve detection. In addition, Ellucian provides alerts and reports specific to Banner, and enables institutions to customize content and frequency.
Institutions will have several opportunities to explore Banner Data Defense during Ellucian Live, the company’s user conference, April 7-10.
